Lotte Geeven is a multi-media artist based in the Netherlands. I met here during a brunch at The May Gallery where she had just started a three month residency culminating in a solo show. Over butter milk waffles we talked and I was immediately attracted to her concept of filming a silver sphere during the dark hours, on the poorly lit streets of New Orleans; a video concerned with the autonomy, character and mystery of a lifeless object. It brought me back to a film language I studied at Bard College. After long conversations about cameras, film speeds, and exposure we ended up putting together a recording from the book she published during her residency “the river” (a canto of literary references to the Mississippi river), a “living portrait” and a tonal documentary that tracks a parade of people marching to Canal Street carrying the silver sphere above their heads, practically celebrating its existence. The sound design for the doc is itself self-referential–incorporating the buzzing and clicks of the hard drive as it played back the footage. //MD
